Sentinel of Heritage
Sentinel of Heritage
Medium: Acrylic on canvas, Foam
Size: 46x56" Oval
Year: 2024In this installation, I have combined painting and three-dimensional elements to create a rich visual and emotional experience. The oval canvas features one of the characters from my "New People" collection, known for having three eyes, which symbolizes my constant state of alertness in a perpetually changing world. This trait captures the essence of adaptability and acute perception that I navigate in my daily life.
The vibrant and bold colors reflect the energy and vitality of my present, drawing the viewer's gaze and conveying the passion and dynamism that permeate my everyday existence. These colors are not just a visual choice but a representation of the life force that drives me.
To add an additional dimension, I have incorporated three-dimensional foam feathers around the painting, arranged to create an engaging volume. These feathers evoke the aesthetics of traditional African masks that utilize raffia, infusing the piece with a sense of cultural heritage and a connection to ancestral artistic traditions. This element serves as a reminder that our roots trace back to Africa, the cradle of humanity, and that this shared heritage is woven into the fabric of who we are.
The combination of these elements creates an installation that is not only visually striking but also invites deep reflection on adaptability, perception, and the rich diversity of cultural influences that shape us. It is a tribute to our shared origins and the enduring legacy of our African roots.
